Director of Business Development

Who are we looking for?

First Transit is looking for a Director of Business Development to help us grow and retain business in Western United States. This person will build and maintain a business pipeline for fixed route, paratransit, microtransit and other emerging passenger transportation technologies. Taking the lead on retention and new-business bids means the Director of Business Development must have a strong knowledge of the industry and have the interpersonal skills to communicate directly with clients and other business units within First Transit.

This position requires a self-starter who will perform under a high degree of autonomy. The role is remote and involves significant travel. Although the candidate is ideally located within California, we will consider qualified applicants from elsewhere.

Major job responsibilities are:

  • Become expert on the services offered by First Transit through sales training, document review, location visits, etc.
  • Help create business development pipeline across Western United States, identifying key challenges that First Transit can help potential customers solve and/or the value we can bring.
  • Build relationships with key decision-makers and influencers. Effectively communicate with clients through email, phone and in person meetings to understand their organization, transit system and needs.
  • Effectively communicate First Transit’s value proposition.
  • Industry participation through attending trades shows, involvement in committees, weekly reviews of trade publications. Stay abreast of changes in the transportation market.
  • Lead RFP processes including, strategy development, coordinating corporate and operational resources, pricing oversight and leading post proposal activities (interview, clarifications, negotiations and award).
  • Submits new ideas for FT value proposition improvement based on feedback from clients.
  • Work in Salesforce to track and update the status of projects, customers and contracts
  • Review new vendors and technology to understand the latest technology in the industry, finding best custom solutions tailored for customers.
  • Works to achieve both individual and Business Development Team annual revenue targets.
  • Work with operations teams on implementation of new contracts and initiatives

Experience and Skill Required

  • Preferred - Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or related field. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Preferred - Experience in transportation industry
  • Strong presentation and communication skills including email, phone, and in person.
  • Business Development, marketing or sale experience is an asset
  • Creativity, intellectual curiosity, high standards, persistence, and achievement oriented.
  • Organized, responsive, and ability to move quickly through opportunities.
  • Experience working with complex RFP’s and/or contracts.
  • Experience with MS suite including: word, excel, outlook and TEAMs preferred.
  • CRM Software experience is an asset
